Valentine’s Day holds a special meaning in our home. It is not about the paper hearts or chocolate covered cherries, but about spending time together as a family. This past weekend we created a family event to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
This year we started with the decorations for our evening. Andie created this winking heart themed Owl to watch over us as we have dinner.
Then we finished our homemade Valentine’s Day cards for our family and classroom friends.
For dinner. Beckett decided we would have “P” inspired dinner including pasta, peaches, pie, pears and peppermint tea.
We tried to find the best heart-shaped pasta we could. Everyone agreed that the Oliveri fresh pasta was the best. Katie likes to eat hers plain, with a little parmesan cheese, Beckett toasted and sprinkled with olive oil, while Andie and likes a nice melted cheddar cheese sauce.
I wanted something a little different for my husband and I. We found a recipe for on the Oliveri.ca site that caught my eye. The Melting Heart Ravioli with Vanilla Champagne Butter sauce, sounded like the perfect recipe to try. The recipe took less than 15 minutes to make and is at a basic skill level to create.
The picture below is NOT my picture. It can’t be, as once the dish was completed and ready to serve my border collies knocked the pan out of my hand and onto the floor. I love my dogs, I think this might have been their way of saying they wanted to join in the Valentine’s Day celebrations with the rest of the family.
I modified the ingredients slightly to suit our tastes.
3 tbsp (45 mL) Butter, divided
- 2 Cloves garlic, minced
- ½ cup (125 mL) Champagne or dry sparkling wine
- 1 ½ cups (375 mL) Whipping cream (35%)
- 4 slices of cooked Maple Leaf Bacon
- green onions
- 1 (300 g) Package Olivieri® Hearts Cheese Ravioli
- Parmesan cheese curls
We didn’t even actually taste the dish, but it smelled fabulous. I hope everyone has a chance to try fresh Oliveri Heart shaped pasta, but remember it’s only in stores for a limited time!

My life is busy. I don’t wear ‘busy’ as a badge of honour, it is just the way our lives have evolved. Our children, pets, home, farm and careers take a lion’s share of our day. Once in a while my husband and I stop and reconnect.
My husband loves nothing more than being at the cottage, sitting on the dock and enjoying the silence, but in the middle of winter that is impossible. I asked my best friend to take the kids for a couple of hours while I prepared a simple, healthy meal, with our favourite ingredients. I found a recipe on Appehtite.ca and decided to modify it to suit our tastes.
Sherrie-Mae’s Chicken & Bacon Brown Butter Sacchetti
1 600g package of Olivieri Chicken & Bacon Sacchetti
6 slices Maple Leaf pre cooked bacon (chopped)
1 medium sized orange bell pepper
1/3 cup of unsalted butter
pinch of sea salt
dash of roasted garlic powder 4re4
sprigs of fresh cilantro
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella
The fresh Olivieri Sacchetti pasta took only three minutes to prepare. I browned the butter, cooked bacon and slices of orange bell pepper in a large saute pan for 4 minutes, just until the peppers began to soften. I drained the pasta and tossed 1/2 of the cooked pasta into the the saute pan. Gently, with a wooden spoon I sautéed the pasta with the brown butter mixture. I then sprinkled roasted garlic powder and sea salt over the pasta while maintain a low heat for 2 minutes. I finished the dish with a sprig of cilantro and shredded mozzarella. In less than 15 minutes I created a romantic dinner with my husband.
We enjoyed the dish sitting by the fire place warming our feet and reconnecting.
The good people Olivieri Pasta are running a Valentine’s Day contest. The grand prize is a luxurious spa trip for two, a fabulous gift for the most romantic day of the year.

As an parent, educator and community coach I look at the Active for Life site, for proper coaching techniques, developmental checklists and fun outdoor activities for my three children. I am proud to be hosting a twitter party with them on February 3, 2014, with prizes to capture you special moments with your family and prizes to keep your kids active.
By design Active for Life is:
Active for Life is the place where parents go to learn about how to make a difference in the health and happiness of their children. Research shows there’s a right way and a right time to develop the fundamental movement and sport skills that benefit kids for their entire lives. Learning these basic movement and sports skills is known as becoming physically literate.
Being physically literate is the foundation for being successful in sport and in life. Physical literacy gives active kids the best chance at becoming top-level athletes who may someday compete in high-performance sport. It also results in them leading an active life. And as the word “literacy” implies, just like reading, writing and arithmetic, movement skills need to be taught.
A social enterprise founded by B2ten, Active for Life is a national movement about physical literacy. We target parents who want to raise active and successful kids and we benefit not just them but communities across Canada.
By providing expert advice, inspirational tips and activity ideas we can help parents make sure their children get the recommended daily amount of physical activity. And experts tell us that physically literate kids have fun being active, and that makes them more likely to stay active for life.

My friends at GoFer Productions are looking for some youthful actors to cast in very cool adventure detective web series. They are looking for children ages 8, 10 and 12 to cast in the four roles that need to be filled.
Here is a little about the characters:
Miles Maggins: At 12 years old, Miles is the oldest of the Maggins siblings. He’s the most daring of the trio, however he always keeps a protective eye on Max and Maddie. He idolizes James Bond and always finds the most exciting and creative gadgets to help solve cases.
Max Maggins: Obsessed with science, Max attempts to concoct new experiments daily. Although they tend to blow up in his face, literally. The 10 year old stays on point and never gives up, much like his hero, Albert Einstein. He’s always the first to crack a joke, or state his opinion, and his goofy demeanor frequently gets the trio into and out of sticky situations.
Maddie Maggins: Maddie’s passion for mysteries ignites the screen as she helps her brothers stay focused. Only being 8 years old proves difficult when trying to be taken seriously. however Maddie is the bravest and most adventurous of the bunch. She is always looking for a journey. just like her hero, Amelia Earhart.
Johnny Krumbert: Johnny wants nothing more than to be included with the Maggins trio. The only problem is that he’s scared of everything! He attempts to bring them mysteries, however most of them have been solved or don’t need solving. Always wanting to help in some way, Johnny will show up on a “crime scene,” invited or not.
My three are not actors, but they could all lawyers when they explain why they cannot clean their rooms. This is an excellent opporunity for budding actors to land a role that will take them viral.
